Back to the Books … and Loving It: Reflections from My DNP Journey

Starting my DNP program at UCLA was one of the most exciting—and most exhausting—things I’ve ever done. Between coursework, clinical hours, and the usual whirlwind of life, my weekly blog went on pause. But now that things have calmed down a bit, I’m back and I’m embracing a new rhythm: quarterly reflections.

Here’s what I’ve learned so far about staying grounded, inspired, and even joyful while chasing big goals:

1. Celebrate Small Wins

  • Every assignment submitted, every new skill mastered, every patient encounter that taught you something counts. Don’t wait for the “big victory” - give yourself credit for the small stuff too.

2. Make Time for Yourself

  • DNP life is demanding, but self-care is essential. Whether it’s a short walk, a coffee break, or just 10 minutes of deep breathing, carving out little pockets of calm keeps you from burning out.

3. Stay Curious, Not Perfect

  • Mistakes and challenges are inevitable in advanced practice. Instead of aiming for perfection, focus on learning. Curiosity keeps your mind engaged and your spirit flexible.

4. Keep Your Playful Side Alive

  • Just because you’re in grad school doesn’t mean you have to give up fun. Dance while making dinner, laugh at your own typos, or take a creative detour in a research assignment. Play fuels energy and creativity.

5. Connect With Your People

  • Whether it’s classmates, colleagues, or mentors, leaning on others for support, encouragement, or just a shared laugh makes the journey easier (and more enjoyable).

6. Remember Why You Started

  • DNP programs are intense, but your passion for improving patient care, advancing nursing practice, or making a difference in healthcare is what fuels you. Keep that “why” front and center .. it’s your north star.

Life as a DNP student is a balancing act, and it’s easy to feel like there’s never enough time. But slowing down to notice progress, celebrate joy, and embrace the journey makes the challenges worthwhile.

And a gentle reminder: You are allowed to take up space. You are allowed to be yourself. You are allowed to enjoy this journey, because growth and joy aren’t mutually exclusive.
